Breakfast with Buddha

When his sister tricks him into taking her guru on a trip to their childhood home, Otto Ringling, a confirmed skeptic, is not amused. Six days on the road with an enigmatic holy man who answers every question with a riddle is not what he'd planned. But in an effort to westernize his passenger—and amuse himself—he decides to show the monk some "American fun" along the way. From a chocolate factory in Hershey to a bowling alley in South Bend, from a Cubs game at Wrigley field to his family farm near Bismarck, Otto is given the remarkable opportunity to see his world—and more important, his life—through someone else's eyes. Gradually, skepticism yields to amazement as he realizes that his companion might just be the real thing.

In Roland Merullo's masterful hands, Otto tells his story with all the wonder, bemusement, and wry humor of a man who unwittingly finds what he's missing in the most unexpected place.

5One of my favorite books!  Jul 19, 2010
It's hard to find a novel that is well written, engaging, and humorous, and that has a spiritual (not religious!) theme. Breakfast with Buddha incorporates all of these qualities, and does so realistically and poignantly. Although most of the humor is the small-chuckle kind, there are indeed a few laugh-out-loud moments. A couple of the "facts" seem inaccurate or off kilter, but not so much as to detract from the story. Reading a novel two or more times is rare for me, but this is a book I will definitely be reading again.

5Wonderful story  Jul 15, 2010
I just finished this book and feel the loss of no longer having it to read. It's a wonderfully written, moving, hilarious story, with great descriptions and memorable characters.

4Thought provoking  Jul 05, 2010
This is an enjoyable read that will make you stop and think every now and then. The plot - unwilling driver on a road trip to deliver a holy man-sets up delightful encounters and situations along the way. Watching the characters react to the holy man tells you about them, but perhaps also about yourself. The things that are said tend to resonate and stick in your head. Worth reading if you are interested in things spiritual and perhaps very worth reading if you are not.

5This Awesome Book....  Jun 28, 2010
This book has caused a spiritual reawakening in my life. I bought this copy to send to my son for his birthday, hoping that he will enjoy it as much as my wife and I did. Read this book; you won't be disappointed.

5Every American should read this!  May 19, 2010
This book was one of our Book Club reads. It didn't take but a second to get into this book. It may be fiction, but Mr.Merullo hits the nail on the head with his "Religious Mixology"! Wish it had been around when I grew up Catholic is the 60's to open up a few minds!
The developing relationships between the caricatures was so fun to be a part of, that I thought I was sitting in the backseat of the car.
Do yourself a big favor...read it and then share it with a friend!
