Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living (Shambhala Classics)

Start Where You Are is an indispensable handbook for cultivating fearlessness and awakening a compassionate heart. With insight and humor, Pema Chödrön presents down-to-earth guidance on how we can "start where we are"—embracing rather than denying the painful aspects of our lives. Pema Chödrön frames her teachings on compassion around fifty-nine traditional Tibetan Buddhist maxims, or slogans, such as: "Always apply only a joyful state of mind," "Don't seek others' pain as the limbs of your own happiness," and "Always meditate on whatever provokes resentment."

Working with these slogans and through the practice of meditation, Start Where You Are shows how we can all develop the courage to work with our inner pain and discover joy, well-being, and confidence.

4It's where you are starting from  Jul 28, 2010
What puts me off most about this book is the title "Start Where You Are," which is so hackneyed. I don't see how it is possible to start from where you aren't. That would contradict all laws of physics and logic. And then the second part of the title, "A Guide to Compassionate Living," I don't see how that's related to the first half of the title "Start Where You Are." How does starting from where I am now have to do with being compassionate? One assumes that Chodron means compassionate towards others, but she doesn't. She means compassionate towards ourselves. Stop beating up on ourselves is her main thesis. Much in this book sounds like psychology 101, with new terminology that one needs to write down and review to remember. Besides terminology, there are also lists and what she calls "slogans" but Christians call proverbs. If someone telling you to stop being so hard on yourself, to lighten up, to not take life seriously, because it is only a passing dream anyway, is what you've been waiting your whole life to hear, then I say, "Buy this book with your last dollar." If not, and you feel you are beyond that point in your spiritual development, I think you would be better off reading the Bible, especially the Psalms. The value of this book depends on what is indicated in the title: where you are starting from.

5Start Where You Are  May 12, 2010
The book arrived promptly in excellent shape. If you're looking for a primer on buddhism, this is a good place to start. Gets you to practicing the ideas even as you're reading the book.....challenges you to keep an open mind with things you don't quite understand at the beginning...and to lighten up about it. If you're not willing to read it slowly and reflect, its not for you.

5WONDERFUL!  Dec 10, 2009
Pema Chodron is such a good illustrator of ideas. She can really break things down so they make perfect sense.

5A new way to live  Dec 08, 2009
I really enjoyed this book. If you want to live a more peaceful and compassionate life this book is a must. I enjoyed this and even purchased another for a gift for my sister. I think Pema Chodron is an excellent writer and you can relate to what she is saying. She really makes you think about the life you are now living. You can live a better life. I highly recommend this book. She is one of my favorite authors.

5Very Clear  Jun 30, 2009
The author is very experienced at Zen meditation and does a good job of translating the original language of the "slogans" into modern English. A very helpful book!
